The Judicial History of Surguja District came into being during the erstwhile state then it was ruled by the local princely state. The evidence of it is available at the main door of the local collectorate building where inscription as to it shows that then a combined High Court building was available here which was built in the year 1936 then this district was under Central Provences and Berar State, the ruler presided over as a Judge, prior to independence, well legally educated Judges presided over and performed their judicial work. The present building which is the District & Sessions Court of the Surguja is situated near the aforesaid collectorate building which was constructed in the year 1960.
Prior to 1969 this District was under the District Judge of Raigarh (C.G.).
